Bert Kuhn participated in American tradition on November 9, 2006 in Connecticut , as he was chosen to make the cut on what would become the Rockefeller Center Tree. The day made news all over the U.S. and Bert received calls from many different parts of the country from people recognizing him on their local news stations or newspapers. Harmony resident adds expertise to a towering Christmas tradition

Bert Kuhn took his 12-year-old son, Hunter, to work Thursday so he could witness an American tradition.

The Harmony Township resident, a co-owner of Action Tree Service, was part of the 12 person crew that cut down this year's 88-foot Norway spruce for Rockefeller Center's Christmas tree.

Each year Torsilieri Inc., based out of Peapack-Gladstone, takes down a monstrous tree and transports it to Manhattan. The company solicited Kuhn's help this year, so he headed Thursday to the Kinnaird home in western Connecticut.

A crane lifted the entire 9-ton tree onto a 115-foot-long trailer. From there, workers began tying the 45-foot-diameter tree down for road transport, Kuhn said.

"We're just getting into New York now," Kuhn said on his cell phone late Thursday afternoon. "We were actually following the tree. There was a police escort and it took up a lane and a half on the highway. Everybody (on the road) was looking at in amazement and smiling. People were taking out their cell phones and shooting pictures of it."

The tree came from the yard of the Kinnaird family in Ridgefield, a community of about 22,000 people 70 miles southwest of Hartford.

"It is hugely exciting, and it's huge news in the neighborhood," said Rob Kinnaird, 58, an antique car restorer who remembers watching the tree grow outside his window as a child.

The Kinnairds moved the driveway four times over the years to accommodate the growing branches.

"I have pictures of my mom holding me out by the tree," said Kinnaird, adding that a stint at Rockefeller Center will be a perfect end for the tree.

Workers will start putting up the tree Friday morning at Rockefeller Plaza.

"When they first get it there and water the tree, it immediately pulls up 200 gallons of water," Kuhn said. He said a Torsilieri worker told him it takes a crew two weeks to stabilize the tree and decorate it.

Helicopters are used to scout for New York City's most famous Christmas decoration. Characteristics such as width, tree density and height, which must be at least 75 feet, are used to make the final selection.
